About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Rangeland Ecologist to support the farmers and communities who Sayari Earth serves. This role works closely with farmers to help advise them on land management strategies that enhance livestock productivity, soil health, and revegetation in the context of a soil carbon project. You will provide hands-on technical support to farmers and help embed simple yet effective, science-based approaches into land management practices. This role may work across provinces with a key focus on supporting and serving farmers and land managers with realistic yet effective technical support to help them improve their land and livelihoods.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide the ecological implementation of fire prevention, rotational grazing, and rangeland restoration strategies.
  • Design and oversee biodiversity monitoring systems and habitat impact assessments.
  • Identify ecological risks and restoration opportunities across diverse landscapes.
  • Provide on-site training and support to field teams to ensure ecological best practices.
  • Contribute ecological input to carbon project documentation and methodology alignment.
  • Collaborate with communities and stakeholders to integrate local ecological knowledge.
  • Assist with Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
  • Lead in the updating and generation of land unit specific management plans.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or a related field (Master’s minimum, PhD an advantage).
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience in ecosystem restoration, biodiversity monitoring, or conservation planning.
  • Strong understanding of ecological processes and applied restoration techniques.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, with the ability to interpret ecological data for technical and nontechnical audiences.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with South African rangeland ecosystems and biodiversity conservation priorities.
  • Experience working in multi-stakeholder landscapes, especially with rural communities or landowners.
  • Experience contributing to nature-based carbon projects or methodologies (e.g., VM0047, VM0042, VM0032).
